A ground mount solar installation puts your array on open land instead of a roof. You choose the angle, you choose the direction, and you are not limited by the pitch of a building. The trade-off is that almost everything has to be built on site.
SolarSet takes a different route. We build complete ground mounted systems at our factory in Center, Colorado, then ship them ready to set in place. The panels, racking, battery storage, inverter and wiring arrive as one assembled unit. Most of the work that normally happens in your field has already happened in ours.
Choosing the right system starts with what you actually run. We review load requirements, runtime expectations, battery storage, site conditions and future expansion, then match those to a system size across our off-grid, hybrid and grid-tie lines.
If you want to work through the numbers first, our guide on what size off-grid solar system you need walks through the calculation in detail.
We ship standard units anywhere in North America. Curbside delivery is free within 300 road miles of our factory in Center, Colorado.
Delivery assumes an accessible driveway or parking lot connected to a well-maintained public road. If the unit is being unloaded on public property, we need formal proof of permission from the Authority Having Jurisdiction before arrival. The buyer, or someone representing the buyer, has to be on site to accept the system.
Anchoring is what holds a ground mounted solar system in place against wind and weather. The method depends on the site: soil type, frost depth, drainage and local code all affect what is required.
SolarSet can set and anchor the system in select locations, priced case by case. Where we cannot, we will tell you what the system needs so your contractor can plan the foundation before the unit arrives.
We want to be clear about this, because the answer decides how you plan your project.
SolarSet builds, tests and delivers the system. Setting the unit in place and anchoring it are separate services, available in select locations only, and quoted case by case. Outside those areas, buyers arrange placement and anchoring with their own contractor or equipment.
We are not a nationwide installation company. We are a manufacturer that has already done the assembly work, which means whoever finishes the job on your site has far less to do.
A conventional ground mounted solar system is assembled from parts. A typical job runs something like this:
Each step needs a different trade, a different tool, and dry enough weather to work. Installation costs vary with soil, distance and access more than with the equipment itself, which is why two quotes for the same size solar panel system can look nothing alike.
There are also different types of ground mounted arrays. Standard ground mounts hold panels at a fixed angle on a frame anchored at several points. Pole mounts carry panels on a single post set deep in the ground. Which one suits a site depends on soil, clearance and how much land you can commit.
Space matters too. A ground mounted array needs open, unshaded ground, and the square feet add up quickly as the system grows. It needs room for equipment access during the build and clearance for maintenance afterward.
SolarSet assembles and wires each system indoors, on a jig, under the same conditions every time. It is tested before it leaves the building. What arrives on your site is a finished solar panel system on its own frame, not a pallet of components and an instruction manual.
That removes most of the on-site build from the schedule. There is no racking to erect, no panel-by-panel mounting, no on-site wiring of the array. The work that remains is placing the unit, anchoring it, and connecting it to whatever it powers.
It also removes the variable that causes most delays in conventional solar panel installations: weather and labor availability at the site. Assembly happens on a factory floor, not in a field in March.
We are based in Center, Colorado, in the San Luis Valley, and we ship standard units across North America. The free curbside delivery radius covers 300 road miles from the factory. Placement and anchoring services are available in a smaller area than delivery, so ask early if that matters to your project.
Ground mounted panels suit properties with land and without a good roof, and they let you put solar energy exactly where it is needed. Our systems are working on small homes and cabins, larger homes, campers and RVs, construction sites of both sizes, telecommunications infrastructure, agricultural operations and well pumps.
They tend to make sense where running a new utility line is expensive, where the site is remote, or where the operation cannot wait weeks for a crew to build an array in place.
It depends on the site. Ground mounts cost more than a roof mount in materials and labor, but they let you set the angle and direction freely, and they avoid roof work entirely. On a property with open land and no suitable roof, that comparison usually favors the ground.
Enough open, unshaded ground for the array plus clearance around it, measured in square feet rather than acres for most of our systems. Exact footprint depends on system size. We confirm it during sizing.
For placement and anchoring outside our service area, yes. You do not need anyone to assemble the array or wire the panels, because that is already done.
Less than most people expect, and what they do need is easy to reach. Solar ground mounts sit at working height, so clearing snow, dust or debris does not involve a ladder or a roof. You will want to keep vegetation down around the frame so nothing shades the panels, and check anchors after a hard winter. Because the array is accessible, a technician can inspect the whole system from the ground, which keeps service visits short and simple.
We factor future expansion into sizing. Tell us where you expect your loads to go and we will size accordingly.
Send us your location, your loads and what the ground looks like, and we will tell you what fits and what the delivery and anchoring options are. Contact our team to get started.
