One of the most common questions we hear from those considering solar systems is in regards to their ability to withstand hail and secondly, what would happen in the occasion that their system would be damaged by such a weather event. This is a very understandable concern, as nobody wants to invest in a solar system only to have it fail prematurely due to causes outside of their control. The good news is that solar panels are built to withstand most hailstone strikes and have proved to be very resistant to such impacts both in testing and in the field. Certainly, the typical home will sustain significant damage to roof, siding, windows, etc, before the solar system would be compromised. In the unlikely event that a solar panel would be damaged from hail, this is generally an item which is covered by the home insurance policy. If you are in question on this point, we recommend having this discussion with your insurance company to ensure coverage.
An excellent article about what researchers from National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) discovered on the resilience of solar panels to hail is posted on the energy.gov site. Rather than reiterate their findings I will link to the article here, and we encourage you to read what they have observed and documented.
